Iguanas

During the last 40 years many iguanas have been released in southern Florida. Unfortunately, because iguanas are not indigenous to the area, and because they have no natural predators in Florida, these lizards have multiplied and become a nuisance to both humans and other wildlife:

• Iguanas can spread salmonella, a hazardous bacteria, and should be considered a health hazard. Any child bitten by iguanas must be taken to a hospital emergency room immediately.
• Iguanas will devour flowering plants in your yard, swim in your pool, and leave excrement everywhere.
• Iguanas have sharp teeth, sharp claws and powerful tails. These lizards can bite and scratch. Wild iguanas are not suitable as pets.
